The capriciousness of young love tangled up in desire heightens an ancient family feud. In this interactive production of one of Shakespeare’s best-known works, audiences were confronted with their own sense of communal responsibility and complacency: we are all responsible for and to ourselves and our community, and no one’s hands are clean at the end of this play.
Director’s Note: I will be frank: I don’t have anything pretty or pithy to say. If I’ve done my job well, you shouldn’t need to read this. So, instead, if you’re still reading, I’ll share some hopes, and maybe that will add to your experience (or, at least, not detract from it): I hope that you have come here, at least in part, for the sake of seeing live theatre. I hope that you feel the magic of being with other people, experiencing a story together at the same time and in the same place. I hope you feel your complicity in the events of the play. I hope this performance makes you consider the ways in which you show up for your community. I hope this performance encourages you to connect with another person - maybe the person sitting next to you, maybe a person involved in the production, maybe a relative who asks what you’ve been up to lately. I hope Shakespeare sneaks into your heart, or nestles behind your lungs, or lodges in your throat and comes out with a joking “thou” in a few days. I hope storytelling matters to you, and I hope you know that it cannot happen without you.
