As salient as it was when it was first performed in 1955, Inherit the Wind portrays a fictionalized version of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, in which the law banning the teaching of evolution in public schools was challenged in a small Tennessee town. Two titans of the law swoop into this town to take opposing sides on a case in which “the right to think is very much on trial!” Lovers, preachers, teachers, lawyers, children, townspeople, and one eloquent critic clash together in a massive historical moment that threatens to tear the town — and the country — apart.
